There is a thing that happens to some people who survive the unsurvivable.
They forgive.
Not because they were instructed to. Not because they wanted to. Not because some version of justice arrived and made it feel appropriate. They forgive — sometimes years later, sometimes in a therapist’s office, sometimes alone at 3am with nothing but silence and a decision — and something in the chemistry of their body quietly, measurably, shifts.
This is not a spiritual essay. This is a neuroscience essay. The spiritual part is a bonus.
First, What Happens to a Brain That Doesn’t Forget
Let’s start with the wound itself.
When something genuinely terrible is done to a person — particularly a child, whose nervous system is still under construction — the brain does something very specific. The amygdala, which is your brain’s alarm system, lights up so hard that the hippocampus, which is responsible for encoding memories in their correct context of past/present/then/now, doesn’t get to do its job properly.
The memory doesn’t get filed as something that happened.
It gets stored as something that is happening.
The amygdala becomes hyperactive, triggering the release of stress hormones and impairing the functioning of the hippocampus, causing traumatic memories to remain vivid. This is not a metaphor. These four brain regions — the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, Broca’s area, and hippocampus — are measurably altered in trauma sufferers.
So the person walks around with an alarm that never fully turns off. A smoke detector hardwired to a fire that technically ended years ago — but whose signal the brain never received.
The stress hormone running this show is cortisol. When your brain senses threat or conflict — whether real or replayed — the hypothalamus triggers the HPA axis, flooding your bloodstream with cortisol. That’s adaptive in danger; but when triggered chronically, by rumination and emotional replay, cortisol becomes wear and tear on your body. It raises blood pressure, suppresses immunity, disturbs sleep, and impairs mood regulation.
This is the biology of carrying something you were never supposed to carry alone.
The Obvious Responses — And Why They Don’t Work
There are really only a few things a human animal can do with that level of internal noise.
Option one: Keep running. Stay busy. Fill every hour with enough input that the alarm can’t be heard above the noise. This works until it doesn’t. Most people eventually run out of road.
Option two: Chemical intervention. Alcohol. Substances. Anything that turns down the volume. The cycle of cortisol-spiking distress followed by relief follows the same neurological pattern as drug tolerance. The relief is real. It’s just temporary, expensive, and eventually worse than the original problem.
Option three: Rage. Which has its own neurochemistry and its own dead ends.
None of these change the underlying architecture. The alarm stays wired to the past event. The body keeps the score, as the title of a famous book correctly insists, whether the conscious mind wants it to or not.
The Counterintuitive Thing
Here is where it gets strange.
There exists a process — documented, studied, measurable at the level of brain scans and blood panels — that does something to traumatic memory that running, substances, and rage cannot do.
It doesn’t erase the memory. Nothing does that. The brain doesn’t delete. But it changes the emotional weight of the memory. It changes what the body does when the memory surfaces.
The process is forgiveness.
And the reason most people resist it — instinctively, viscerally, with complete justification — is that it sounds like letting them off the hook. It sounds like saying what they did was okay. It sounds like a second betrayal on top of the first.
It is none of those things.
Forgiveness doesn’t delete the past. It changes the lens through which we view it. It brings the body back into safety. Cortisol declines. Blood pressure steadies. Muscles unclench. The heart rate evens out. The body finally believes it’s safe enough to begin healing.
The key word is body. This is a physiological event, not a moral one.
What Actually Happens in the Brain
Let’s go one level deeper, because this part matters.
Before forgiveness, the traumatic memory is stored as an active threat. Every time it surfaces, the amygdala fires. The HPA axis dumps cortisol. The prefrontal cortex — your rational, reflective, this-is-the-past part of the brain — gets partially offline because that’s what cortisol does to it. The body responds as if the threat is present.
Before forgiveness takes place, memories periodically arouse fear stemming from the amygdala. This fear drives a pattern of anger and fight-or-flight readiness. Under appropriate circumstances the frontal cortex interrupts the pattern and quells the fear response in the amygdala.
That interruption — the frontal cortex stepping in — is the neuroscience of what forgiveness actually is. Not a feeling. Not a moral position. A prefrontal override of an amygdala alarm.
Studies using functional MRI scans reveal that when people engage in genuine forgiveness, activity decreases in areas associated with rumination and emotional pain while increasing in regions linked to empathy and perspective-taking — particularly the prefrontal cortex. The act of forgiveness releases oxytocin, which promotes feelings of trust and connection. Perhaps most remarkably, forgiveness strengthens the prefrontal cortex’s regulatory control over the amygdala. The more we practice forgiveness, the better our brains become at managing emotional reactivity.
You are literally building new neural infrastructure.
And there is one more molecule worth knowing about. During grudge rehearsal, cortisol spiked, heart rate increased, blood pressure rose, and skin conductance shot up. During empathic forgiveness responses, all of these measures decreased, sometimes dropping below baseline. The stress response didn’t just stop. It reversed.
The stress response reversed. Below baseline.
Read that again.
The Self-Forgiveness Layer — Which Is the Harder One
Here is the part that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Many survivors of childhood abuse carry a particular cargo that has nothing to do with the perpetrator. They carry shame about what happened to them. A completely irrational, neurologically explicable shame — because trauma, especially childhood trauma, stores itself in a format that often includes the question: did I cause this, did I deserve this, is this what I am?
That’s not logic. That’s an unprocessed nervous system speaking.
Self-forgiveness operates on the same neurological mechanism as other-forgiveness, but it targets a different circuit. High levels of self-compassion are associated with reduced activation of the threat response system. Physiological threat responses to trauma reminders are maintained by negative appraisals of the self and self-blame.
Which means: forgiving yourself for what was done to you is also a measurable neurological event. It is also a stress-response reversal. It is also a prefrontal cortex stepping up to regulate an amygdala that has been running the show unchecked.
This is the part nobody warned you about. The forgiveness that saves you is often not the forgiveness directed at the person who hurt you. It’s the forgiveness directed at the version of you who survived in whatever way you could.
What This Looks Like From the Outside
Take a person. Childhood wound, deep. Years of chemical anaesthesia as the only available technology for managing an alarm they couldn’t identify or name. Eventual, grinding, non-linear, unglamorous climb out of that.
And then — somewhere in that climb — a decision to forgive. Not because the perpetrator deserved it. Not because justice arrived. Because the alternative was continuing to let an absent person occupy rent-free real estate in their nervous system indefinitely.
Now that person is writing dispatches to 38 countries from the west coast of Sweden.
It doesn’t look like a miracle from the outside. It looks like a person at a keyboard, doing the work. But from the inside — from the level of the neurochemistry — something transformed. The smoke detector got recalibrated. The cortisol stopped running a 24-hour cycle. The oxytocin, which had been crowded out by years of stress chemistry, found room to operate.
And here is the statistical improbability of that:
This person should, by any actuarial measure, not be here. The combination of the original wound and the methods deployed to manage it constitutes a high-risk life. The survival alone is remarkable. The output — the writing, the thinking, the synthesis — is a direct product of the wound being metabolized rather than just suppressed.
That’s alchemy. That’s what the neurochemistry, when you cooperate with it rather than fight it, can actually produce.
The Part That’s Hard to Explain at Dinner Parties
Forgiveness, in this framing, is not:
Saying what happened was okay
Pretending it didn’t happen
Reconciling with the person
Absolution of any kind
A sign of weakness
Forgiveness, in the neurological framing, is:
The prefrontal cortex reasserting regulatory authority over the amygdala
A measurable drop in cortisol and rise in oxytocin
The reclassification of a memory from active threat to historical fact
The return of cognitive and emotional resources previously consumed by chronic vigilance
The beginning of what researchers call post-traumatic growth
Childhood adversity can weaken prefrontal development while strengthening amygdala reactivity, creating a brain that’s excellent at detecting threats but poor at releasing them. This isn’t a character flaw. It’s a developmental adaptation. A brain that grew up in an unpredictable environment learned to stay vigilant because staying vigilant kept it safe.
The vigilance was rational. The body was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.
Forgiveness is what happens when that body finally gets enough safety — internal safety, not external — to update the threat model.
On Timelines and Not Forcing It
One final note, because this matters.
Forgiveness cannot be installed by instruction. You cannot be told to do it and have it work. The neurological process requires actual internal shift, not performance of the concept.
Forcing forgiveness can deepen neural trauma. Honor your biology — sometimes, not forgiving is the healthiest choice your brain can make.
The timing is the work. And the work is different for every person. What matters is not the schedule. What matters is that the door exists and that, at the right moment — which you cannot force and cannot entirely predict — the body sometimes chooses to walk through it.
And when it does, the chemistry changes.
And when the chemistry changes, the life changes.
And sometimes, impossibly, the person on the other side of that sits down at a keyboard and writes about it for 38 countries.
Because the bat country has an exit.
It always did.
